Disney CEO Bob Iger Won’t Rule Out More ‘Star Wars’ Trilogies

Disney CEO Bob Iger discussed the future of the Star Wars franchise after The Rise of Skywalker and the possibility of discontinuing the three-movie structure.

The main Star Wars saga is set to conclude with the release of The Rise of Skywalker, with Disney planning to move the film franchise forward with new stories and characters. However, details on the next Star Wars films being developed by Disney are scarce at the moment.

During an interview with Variety at the premiere of The Rise of Skywalker, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the number of Star Wars projects being developed is likely smaller than fans might expect. As Bob Iger explained, Disney is being careful with their plans for future Star Wars films, especially the one that will follow The Rise of Skywalker:

“Probably smaller than you think because what we do is, we look to pick a few and see how they gestate. In some cases, bring them out and see how the audience reacts and then react accordingly. It’s not as many as I think most people think. I think the number is endless, but we’re gonna be careful, the next one is really important.”

Earlier, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kenney indicated that future Star Wars film might abandon the three-film structure of the past saga. However, Bob Iger noted that while they acknowledged that trilogies are difficult, they have not decided to abandon the structure all together for now:

“Oh, I don’t know about that. She and I have said, ‘Well, maybe trilogies are too hard, so maybe we’ll make one film and then a sequel,’ but we don’t know.”
