Disney Executive Talks Possibility Of Reviving Marvel Netflix Shows

Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil. All gone. Right now, it seems to be a matter of time before the axe swings and the grim reaper comes for the likes of The Punisher and Jessica Jones as well. Indeed, the Marvel Netflix series seem to be on borrowed time, and even now folks seem to be pointing fingers at who is to blame: Netflix or Walt Disney Studios. After all, Disney is looking to launch its own streaming service, Disney+, which would be bolstered by whatever properties are added to it from the Fox acquisition.

More than that, Disney will soon have a major stake in Hulu as well, so the House of Mouse would want all of its properties under one umbrella rather than spread out and shared with others. That’s just how Disney operates. But former strategy officer Kevin Mayer, who now runs direct-to-consumer and international offers at Disney, spoke with The Hollywood Reporter at length about a variety of topics, but naturally, Mayer was asked if there’s a possibility of reviving the cancelled Marvel Netflix shows. His answer?

“They are very high-quality shows. We haven’t yet discussed that, but I would say that’s a possibility.”

So not much of a real answer right there. We know that the characters of these cancelled shows would essentially remain on ice for two years, and after that, it’s up in the air what Marvel and Disney would do with them. Given how the mature tone of the Netflix shows would not fit with the more family-oriented tone that Disney wants for its streaming service, that could indicate either watered-down versions of these characters or just a reboot, since Marvel Studios would probably want to chart its own course and not just use what’s been utilized already by Netflix.

Still, though, the actors behind the cancelled shows probably aren’t just going to sit around and wait for two years to see if Marvel and Disney will give them a shot, so it’s probable that the characters will be rebooted. It sounds like a possibility to revive them at Disney+, sure, but a likelihood? That remains to be seen, again, with Disney gearing more towards family-oriented content.
