Disney now holds the rights to the X-Men and the Fantastic Four thanks to its acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets, with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige overseeing the future of these characters. And according to a new report by Variety, Disney is unimpressed with Fox’s final X-Men project, a horror-centric spin-off titled The New Mutants:
“Disney is optimistic that handing Fox superhero properties such as “Fantastic Four” and “X-Men” to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will improve the quality of these movies, but bumps must be smoothed over in that transition. The studio is unimpressed with “New Mutants,” an “X-Men” spinoff with a haunted-house vibe, and believes it has limited box office potential.”
Fox made The New Mutants before it was acquired by Disney. The project has been pushed back numerous times to go undergo reshoots that have not yet happened due to the the film’s stars, who are committed to other film and television projects.
The New Mutants was originally scheduled to be released in theaters on April 13, 2018, before being delayed until February 22, 2019. A third release date for New Mutants was later scheduled for August 2, 2019, before Disney pushed back the date to April 3rd of next year following its acquisition of Fox.
Based on the Marvel Comics team of the same name, The New Mutants centers on five young mutants who are just discovering their abilities while being held in a secret facility against their will.
Directed by Josh Boone from a script co-written by Knate Lee, The New Mutants stars Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin / Magik, Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair / Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Sam Guthrie / Cannonball, Henry Zaga as Roberto da Costa / Sunspot, Blu Hunt as Danielle Moonstar / Mirage, and Alice Braga as Cecilia Reyes.
