Disney’s Freeform Slams Trolls Over ‘The Little Mermaid’ Halle Bailey Casting

The Walt Disney-owned television channel Freeform answers back to the negative backlash surrounding the casting of Grown-ish actress Halle Bailey as Ariel in Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

Freeform released a statement on their Twitter account aimed at those “Poor, Unfortunate Souls” who detested the idea of the titular character being played by a non-Danish, African-American actor.

The hashtag #NotMyAriel immediately began to trend across the Twittersphere when the news arose that Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in the film.

Parent company Disney has not publicly responded to the official casting announcement (which was announced by Halle Bailey and director Rob Marshall) or the immediate backlash. The Little Mermaid is expected to enter production with Halle Bailey’s in early 2020.

Disney’s The Little Mermaid remake will be directed by Rob Marshall from a script written by David Magee. Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villainous sea witch Ursula while Jacob Tremblay & Awkwafina are being eyed for the roles of Flounder and Scuttle, respectively.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will write new songs for the remake to be included alongside the classic tunes the latter penned for the animated version of The Little Mermaid. In addition to his duties as a songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on The Little Mermaid remake and Halle Bailey as we learn it.
