Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ Hits $1 Billion Despite Negative Reviews

Disney’s remake of The Lion King has officially crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

Before Disney’s The Lion King remake was released in theaters, audiences were concerned that the impressive photorealistic visual effects would be overshadowed by the fact that the film appeared to be a shot-for-shot remake of the animated classic. While The Lion King featured a few alterations to Disney’s original version, the aforementioned audience concerns were not unfounded as the film turned out to be practically the same as beloved ’90s hit.

Despite the negative reception towards The Lion King remake, the film cleared $1 billion at the global box office on Tuesday after earning a worldwide total of $999.4 million the previous day. The Lion King joins fellow Disney projects Avengers: Endgame, Captain Marvel, and Aladdin as one of the four 2019 releases to hit the milestone. Furthermore, The Lion King has become to the sixth production from Disney’s live-action studio to hit $1 billion, joining a list that includes AladdinBeauty and the BeastAlice in Wonderland, and two entries in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

Director Jon Favreau’s all-new “The Lion King” journeys to the African savanna where a future king is born. Simba idolizes his father, King Mufasa, and takes to heart his own royal destiny. But not everyone in the kingdom celebrates the new cub’s arrival. Scar, Mufasa’s brother—and former heir to the throne—has plans of his own. The battle for Pride Rock is ravaged with betrayal, tragedy, and drama, ultimately resulting in Simba’s exile. With help from a curious pair of newfound friends, Simba will have to figure out how to grow up and take back what is rightfully his.

Directed by Jon Favreau, The Lion King features the voices talents of Donald Glover as Simba, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, James Earl Jones as Mufasa, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa and Billy Eichner as Timon.

The Lion King is now playing in theaters.
