Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ Eyeing Jacob Tremblay & Awkwafina

Disney is currently developing a live-action remake of its 1989 animated classic The Little Mermaid. Last week, it was reported that Academy Award-nominee Melissa McCarthy was in talks to play the film’s antagonist Ursula and with that news in mind, Disney is reportedly looking at Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina for the roles of Flounder and Scuttle respectively.

Journalist Kristopher Tapley was the first to report this news:

In the original The Little Mermaid film, Flounder, who was Ariel’s best friend, was voiced by Jason Marin while Scuttle the seagull was voiced by Buddy Hackett.

Jacob Tremblay is widely-recognized for his breakthrough role in the critically-acclaimed drama Room, starring alongside Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress. Jacob Tremblay has since appeared in The Book of Henry, Wonder and The Predator. He will next be seen in the comedy Good Boys and the upcoming Shining sequel Doctor Sleep.

Awkwafina starred in Ocean’s 8 and Crazy Rich Asians in 2018. Awkwafina will next be seen in the upcoming comedy-drama film The Farewell and will star in Jumanji: The Next Level alongside Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.

Do you think Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina would be good fits to voice their respective roles if cast in the film? Stay tuned for more updates on The Little Mermaid and other upcoming live-action adaptations from Disney.

The Little Mermaid centered on the princess Ariel, who longed to explore the world beyond the sea. After saving Prince Eric from drowning, Ariel turns to the sea witch Ursula and trades in her voice in order to become a human for the chance to meet the man she rescued.

Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid remake will be directed by Rob Marshall from a script written by David Magee. Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alan Menken will write new songs for the remake to be included alongside the classic tunes the latter penned for the animated version of The Little Mermaid. In addition to his duties as a songwriter, Lin-Manuel Miranda will serve as an executive producer alongside Rob Marshall, Marc Platt, and John DeLuca.
