Disney officially entered the streaming wars with its own video-on-demand service called Disney Plus. Offering a library of classic Disney titles and original projects, excitement for the streaming service was palpable in the months and days ahead of its launch.
Now, Disney Plus says it has far exceeded expectations by garnering over 10 million subscribers in just one day. However, Disney Plus did not outline details on where the subscriptions came from or if they were free or paid for monthly or yearly.
Some analysts predicted it would take Disney Plus a year to hit 10 million subscribers. For comparison sake, Netflix launched in 2007 and has hit 158 million subscribers in that time.
Television projects being developed for Disney Plus include Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, What If?, and Lucasfilms’ Star Wars series’ The Mandalorian, a show centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor. Features films include remakes of Lady and the Tramp, Home Alone, and Night at the Museum.
Disney Plus is now available in Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.
