The original Hocus Pocus hit theaters on July of 1993. The film sadly was not a box office success and only earned roughly $39.5M on a $28M budget. As the years went on, however, the film became a cult hit and is often aired on Halloween. Now, however, it seems that Disney wants to put together a sequel on its new streaming platform.
Last year it was revealed that the Hocus Pocus sequel was in development at Disney Plus. Workaholics writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo is currently signed on to write the film but a director had not been found until now. According to a report from Variety, Hocus Pocus 2 will be directed by Adam Shankman. Adam Shankman himself has a long resume that includes family-friendly comedies like Cheaper by the Dozen 2 and The Pacifier as well as romantic films such as A Walk to Remember. Over the past few years, the director has mostly stuck to television work, directing episodes of shows like Glee and Being Mary Jane.
What do you all make of this news? Are you excited to hear that the Hocus Pocus sequel has found a director? What do you think of it being aired on Disney Plus? Let us know what you think in the comments below!
Kenny Ortega (High School Musical film series; Descendants film series) directed the original Hocus Pocus. The film starred Bette Midler as Winifred “Winnie” Sanderson, Kathy Najimy as Mary Sanderson and Sarah Jessica Parker as Sarah Sanderson. The story followed a trio of witches who were resurrected by a teenage boy named Max Dennison (Omri Katz) in Salem, Massachusetts. Rounding up the cast included Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw, Sean Murray, Jason Marsden, and Doug Jones.
The original Hocus Pocus is now available for streaming on Disney Plus.
