Disney+ Reaches 28.6 Million Paid Subscribers Since Its Debut

Today, Disney announced 28.6 million people have signed onto its Disney Plus streaming service since launch day.

When Disney Plus launched last year on November 12, the streaming service had earned 10 million signups within its first day of release. The launch day success of Disney Plus was so great that subscribers faced technical difficulties that prompted the company to issue a statement noting the demand “exceeded our high expectations.”

Now, Disney has announced Disney Plus gained 28.6 subscribers since it launched. These numbers exceed the expectations many analysts set for Disney Plus, which predicted 20 million to 25 million subscribers for the streaming service.

According to Disney, subscribers are defined as any user for which it recognizes subscription revenue. For example, individuals who pay for the Disney streaming bundle to get Disney Plus, ESPN+, and Hulu at a discounted price are counted as a subscriber for each one of those streaming services.

Television projects being developed for Disney Plus include Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, WandaVision, Hawkeye, What If… ?, and Lucasfilm’s second season of The Mandalorian, a show centered on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, and an Obi-Wan Kenobi series starring Ewan McGregor. Feature films in development include remakes of Home Alone and Night at the Museum.

Disney Plus is now available in Canada, the Netherlands, and the United States.
