Disney Responds To ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Bombing At The Box Office

Solo: A Star Wars Story opened well below earlier projections with a domestic three-day gross of $83.3 million and outright bombed overseas, earning $65 million at the international box office. Now, Disney distribution chief Dave Hollis has commented on the underwhelming box office numbers for the latest standalone Star Wars film during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

Hollis suggested that Solo‘s underwhelming box office performance may have been affected by the film opening so close to the debut of Deadpool 2 and Avengers: Infinity War:

“There’s a question of frequency, and how many times people will go to the movies. Is this too much and too soon for a third time in a five-week period.”

Disney distribution chief added that the studio has a lot of work to do in order to understand why Solo: A Star Wars Story fell below expectations at the box office:

“We are all over it, and will spend a lot of time digging into why things happened the way they did. We have a year and a half before Episode IX comes out.”
