Revealed today by Disney are details on the upcoming Avengers Campus theme park, which features a unique mythology inspired by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although it isn’t part of it. In the Avengers Campus setting, Spider-Man and Iron Man have teamed up to create a new global corporation known as WEB, which stands for Worldwide Engineering Brigade, and their newest invention is a “Web Slinger” vehicle that Avengers Campus attendees get to take on a test spin as the two look for new superheroes to recruit.
WEB has an extended presence at the Avengers Campus Disney park outside of the Spider-Man-themed attraction, with the company having its logos on other attractions and gift shops. Also in development is a larger experience that will put the Avengers on an adventure that spans the Marvel Universe, which may or may not feature the wall-crawler among their ranks, which should become the premiere experience at the Avengers Campus theme park.
Sony has only had the Spider-Man film rights for quite some time, whereas nearly everything else – from the Spider-Man PS4 game to the majority of the character’s shows – belong to Marvel. So with that in mind, it’s absolutely unsurprising to see Peter Parker palling it up with other superheroes at the Avengers Campus in the Disneyland family of parks. The ride will not affect the existence of Universal’s Spider-Man attraction, since that deal remains unaffected due to an agreement between the people in charge of the Universal Studios and Disneyland parks.
Aside from the Avengers Campus adventures down the road, Marvel and Sony do not appear to be talking about the future of the Spider-Man IP on film after the split happened earlier this week. However, discussions could always resume once both parties cool their heads, and there will be plenty of time between now and the release of the next Spider-Man movie for them to talk things over. Regardless of whomever’s making it, the next Spider-Man movie will involve Tom Holland as the title character and Far From Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers – and they’re likely to make a movie that’s in-line with what Kevin Feige already had planned (just without connective tissue to other intellectual properties). For now, Avengers Campus is set to become the go-to place if you want to see Spidey have a connection to Disney as a company as far as live-action content is concerned.
