‘Doctor Strange’ Director Reveals Why He Removed Drunk Driving Scene From Movie

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson explains why he deleted a shot of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Stephen Strange drinking alcohol.

The trailer for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange featured a shot of Benedict Cumberbatch’s eponymous surgeon holding a glass of liquor in a scene presumably set just before his fateful car crash. However, the shot in question was not seen in the theatrical cut of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange.

In a post on Twitter, one fan suggested Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange was originally supposed to be inebriated before the car crash but Disney opposed the idea of seeing a superhero drinking while driving. However, Scott Derrickson responded by explaining that the aforementioned shot was removed because he wanted the car crash to be caused solely by the over-confidence of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and not the possible result of driving while under the influence.

Scott Derrickson is set to return to the director’s chair for Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange sequel. Details on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to be Marvel Studios’ first true foray into the horror genre. Furthermore, the Disney Plus mini-series WandaVision will also serve as the lead-in to the Doctor Strange sequel.

Directed by Scott Derrickson from a script written by Jade Bartlett, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams, Benedict Wong, and Elizabeth Olsen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2021.
