‘Doctor Strange’ Influenced ‘Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse’ Visuals

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse Director Bob Persichetti recently mentioned that the visuals of the movie borrowed a lot from 2016’s Doctor Strange.

After watching Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, you can’t help but notice the outstanding visual effects created by Directors Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman, and their crew. They use unique color palettes and images that no other animated movie has pulled off before. The animation pulled off the perfect blend between a grounded New York City and the craziness that involves traveling between dimensions. This was not an easy feat at all, as they had to pull inspiration out of somewhere and they didn’t look far at all.

In Ramin Zahed’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – The Art of the Movie, Persichetti mentions that the movie’s visuals were heavily influenced by Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange but leaning towards a style of their own. While sitting down with Comicbook he had a lot to say about the influences Doctor Strange had on Into The Spiderverse.

“We didn’t want it to seem familiar. It couldn’t be a tunnel or a derivative of anything we’d seen in Doctor Strange. We really wanted it to represent what would happen when you smash together these subatomic particles and create a tear in the space-time continuum. Other dimensions are drawn to Miles’ Brooklyn because that’s where the Collider is. These multiple universes are trying to resolve themselves through the portal.”

Persichetti goes on to explain that he sees this animated multiverse colliding as abstract art:

“Once the portal opens, and we begin to realize that the Multiverse exists, it looks like a mosaic — except that you’re looking at seven different locations (the same locations in different universes) from subtly different angles with different render scripts on them. Then we had to develop animation to make all these things smash into each other and resolve into one spot. That’s why visually it looks like abstract art. We have taken perspective, unfolded it and laid it out on the big screen, which is pretty amazing!”

To think that the movies produced inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe now share the same aesthetic as the ones before is actually great filmmaking. It allows the public to understand that some colors or visual effects belong to certain characters and their own environments. That way it creates and builds upon a sense of familiarity that evolves in every film. We really hope to see more of this shared aesthetic in the next animated Marvel films!
