‘Doctor Strange’ Director Scott Derrickson Reveals Nod To Hellraiser

Director Scott Derrickson revealed a nod to Hellraiser in Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange.

With almost everyone remaining indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic, many are taking the time to revisit Marvel Studios’ line-up of feature films and director Scott Derrickson joined in on ComicBook.com’s Quarantine Watch Party for Doctor Strange. During the viewing party, Scott Derrickson shared bits of information on Doctor Strange and at one point revealed a tribute to the horror film Hellraiser.

As Scott Derrickson explained, the gruesome shot of Stephen Strange’s injured hands, which have a number of pins embedded into them because of his car crash, is a nod to his time working on Hellraiser: Inferno. For those who may not be aware, Inferno was the third installment of the Hellraiser film series and the direct-to-video release also marked the directorial debut of Scott Derrickson.

Check out Scott Derrickson’s post on the tribute to Hellraiser: Inferno below.

The Hellraiser franchise started with the original film in 1987 and now consists of 10 entries. The film series and literature in the franchise have centered on the villainous Pinhead, the leader of the extra-dimensional beings known as Cenobites, who travel to Earth to harvest human souls.

Scott Derrickson is still attached to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as an executive producer. Details on The Multiverse of Madness are currently limited, though it is said to feature horror elements. Furthermore, the Disney Plus mini-series WandaVision will also serve as the lead-in to the sequel.

Sam Raimi is reportedly in talks to direct from a script written by Michael Waldron. The sequel will star Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, and Elizabeth Olsen. Production is reportedly still planning to begin in June 2020.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 7, 2021.
