‘Doctor Strange’ Sweeps The Box Office With $85 Million

'Doctor Strange' sweeps the box office with an opening weekend debut of $85 million. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange.

Doctor Strange has had a magical weekend. The film, which follows the adventures of Doctor Stephen Strange as he navigates his new life of magic and sorcery after a car accident leaves him incapable of being a neurosurgeon, was forecast to make $70 million its opening weekend.

Unsurprisingly, after all the buzz and generally positive reviews, Doctor Strange has soared higher than expected, topping the box office weekend at $85 million. This makes it the fourteenth Marvel film to debut at number one at the box office. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, Mads Mikkelsen, and Benedict Wong.

Doctor Strange beat out Thor, which made $65.7 million, and even Captain America: The First Avenger, which topped the box office at $65 million its opening weekend. But for its first foray into the MCU and for a lesser known character within the Marvel universe, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange has done really well for itself. The film had a $165 million budget and has thus far surpassed $325 million worldwide after debuting with $44.3 million in China, so Disney and Marvel have more than made their money back and after only the opening weekend.

In second place is DreamWorks animation Trolls, with the voice talents of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, which made a solid $45.6 million. In third place, with $14.7 million is Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield.

Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween dropped to fourth place with $7.8 million and rounding out the top five is Inferno, starring Tom Hanks, with $6.3 million.
