‘Doctor Strange’ Tops Box Office; ‘Arrival’ Makes Strong Debut

For the second week in a row, Marvel‘s Doctor Strange takes the the top spot at the box office. With $43 million, the film, about a doctor who turns to the mystic arts in order to help heal his hands after a car accident, now has a domestic total of $153 million and counting. Directed by Scott Derrickson, the film stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Mads Mikkelsen.

DreamWorks’ animated Trolls took second place with $35 million and brings its domestic numbers to a total of $94 million. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi mystery Arrival starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner (both of whom have starred in superhero films) and Forest Whitaker, took third place in its first week with $24 million. It made more than its forecast of $16 million, most likely due to positive buzz. The film cost $47 million to make and I’m sure it will make it back at the box office. Not only that, but the film is already garnering a lot of awards buzz as well.

In fourth place comes Universal’s Almost Christmas, starring Danny Glover and Gabrielle Union, with $15.6 million and Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, starring Andrew Garfield, takes fifth place with $10.8 million, garnering $32.3 million domestically so far.
