After spending three weeks at number one, Suicide Squad has finally been dethroned at the box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Don’t Breathe managed to secure the top spot at the North American box office this weekend with $26.1 million.
With a production budget of $10 million, Don’t Breathe is the latest horror movie that is exceeding expectations this summer. The film was directed by Fede Alvarez (2013’s Evil Dead) and produced by Sam Raimi. The story follows a group of three teenagers who break into the house of a blind man (Stephen Lang), who is later revealed to be a serial killer. You can probably guess what happens next.
Meanwhile, Suicide Squad earned $12.1 million, bringing its domestic sum to $282.9 million. Overseas, the David Ayer-directed movie took an additional $19.7 million for a total of $353.1 million. As of right now, Suicide Squad has grossed $636 million worldwide. Despite its negative reviews, the latest entry in the DC Extended Universe seems to be performing well at the box office.
Coming in third place behind Suicide Squad was Kubo and the Two Strings, which brought in another $7.9 million. Sausage Party ($7.66 million) and Mechanic: Resurrection ($7.5 million) rounded out the top five. What do you guys think?
