The future of Superman is uncertain with Henry Cavill reportedly done with the role. Recently, director Matthew Vaughn shared his idea for a Superman trilogy that he was working on with Mark Millar. Another famous Superman project that never came to be was Flyby, which was written by J.J. Abrams and going to be directed by Brett Ratner, who was later replaced by McG. Many actors such as Paul Walker, Ashton Kutcher, James Marsden, and others auditioned for the Superman: Flyby role. Another actor who went in years ago was Doom Patrol star Brendan Fraser, who shared his audition experience with Yahoo! Entertainment:
“You feel kind of invincible, [like] ‘I can fly.’ The cape actually makes you think you have the power of flight even though you know you don’t.”
Brendan Fraser said he loved J.J. Abrams’ script and talked about the high-level security he had to go through to read his script:
“The script was printed on crimson paper with black ink so it couldn’t be photocopied. I was allowed to sit in an office and read it for an hour. It was like a covert operation.”
Superman: Flyby was eventually scrapped and became Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.
“It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter the size of the movie — it all goes through some kind of development process.”
Do you think Brendan Fraser would have been a good Superman? Comment below!
Here is the synopsis for Doom Patrol:
DOOM PATROL is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast Super Heroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities—but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence—and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them. Picking up after the events of TITANS, DOOM PATROL will find these reluctant heroes in a place they never expected to be, called to action by none other than Cyborg, who comes to them with a mission hard to refuse, but with a warning that is hard to ignore: their lives will never, ever be the same.
The DC Universe original series stars Matt Bomer as Larry Trainor/Negative Man, Brendan Fraser as Cliff Steele/Robotman, April Bowlby as Elasti-Woman, Diane Guerrero as Crazy Jane, Joivan Wade as Victor Stone/Cyborg and Timothy Dalton as Dr. Niles Caulder/The Chief.
Doom Patrol Season 1 is now available on DC Universe.
