Drew Goddard has taken over script-writing duties for Fox’s Deadpool 2.
Originally, the script was being written by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, but it looks like they are no longer involved. Curiously enough, Collider has also just revealed that Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The Raid) has been hired by Fox to write their X-Force movie, which Reese and Wernick were also presumed to be involved with in some capacity.
This isn’t the first shake-up for the Deadpool sequel. Back in October, Tim Miller vacated the director’s chair due to creative differences and was soon replaced by John Wick co-director David Leitch. Shortly thereafter, the original film’s composer Junkie XL (aka Tom Holkenborg) followed suit in solidarity with Miller.
I really don’t know what to think about all of this. As we all well remember, the opening credits of the original film dubbed Reese and Wernick “the real heroes here.” After everything surrounding Miller’s departure, the writers leaving is not a great sign. However, I will try to remain positive. I am a big fan of Goddard. I absolutely love his film Cabin in the Woods, which he directed and co-wrote with Joss Whedon, as well as just about everything else he’s worked on, going all the way back to his TV days on Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel.
Ryan Reynolds will reprise his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool for Deadpool 2 and will be joined by the already confirmed returning characters Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and the taxi driver Dopinder (Karan Soni), as well as the as-of-yet uncast Cable and Domino. Currently, there is no scheduled release date, but the plan was to start production this summer.
