Fast and Furious star Dwayne Johnson has revealed why he decided to join the DC Extended Universe as the anti-hero Black Adam.
“I have loved the role of Black Adam,. I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I have just loved that backstory. I think that Black Adam has always been, to me, the most intriguing superhero.”
Recently, Dwayne Johnson shared on his social media a picture of him and fellow DCEU actor Henry Cavill, who portrays Clark Kent a.k.a Superman as the two DC actors were celebrating the holidays together. While the Shazam film has a release date set for 2019, Johnson said in a 2015 interview that we might see the movie earlier than 2019, although as we mentioned above, there hasn’t been many updates about this project for a while now.
“No, I don’t think it is going to be that far away. It’s going to be earlier than that. I don’t think 2019.”
Back in August 2016, Dwayne Johnson’s producing partner Dany Garcia spoke about the film existing in the same universe as the fellow Justice League members. In addition, Garcia spoke about how the team had no problem with taking their time in getting the script right and not rushing the movie.
“We don’t mind taking our time. We’re being very careful with each act and scene to go back and layer in as much as possible. We’ve got so many wonderful superhero franchises out there… we don’t need to run away from them and say ‘we can’t be that,’ but it’s important to understand what are the best aspects of a Batman [movie] versus Avengers versus Deadpool? What are the elements people are responding to? We want to move the needle.”
Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema’s Shazam, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam, is currently set to come out in theaters on Friday April 5, 2019.
