Elizabeth Banks To Star & Direct ‘The Invisible Woman’ For Universal

Elizabeth Banks has been tapped to direct and star in Universal’s horror film Invisible Woman.

While Tom Cruise’s The Mummy was designed to launch Universal’s cinematic universe comprised of its classic movie monsters, the dismal reviews and poor box office performance of the film prompted the studio to change course and focus on smaller, filmmaker-driven projects for the horror icons. Now, The Elizabeth Banks is set to develop an original take on Invisible Woman, which she will also star in and direct for Universal.

Elizabeth Banks will also produce alongside her husband, Max Handelman, through the couple’s Brownstone Productions. The current draft of Universal’s Invisible Woman script was penned by The Girl on the Train scribe Erin Cressida Wilson.

Elizabeth Banks previously helmed Pitch Perfect 2 for Universal. Most recently, Elizabeth Banks wrote, directed, and stared in 2019’s Charlie’s Angels.

Released in 1940, Universal’s original Invisible Woman film was more of a screwball comedy that followed a department store model named Kitty Carroll who the first test subject of an invisibility machine. After becoming invisible, Carroll sets out to get revenge on the boss who fired her from her previous job but becomes embroiled in a heist involving gangsters. The Hollywood Report sources reportedly described the tone of Erin Cressida Wilson’s script for the Invisible Woman as “Thelma & Louise meets American Psycho.”
