X-Men: The Last Stand introduced Marvel fans to Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde. The role was only in the film for a brief time but she did reprise the role in the Bryan Singer-directed 2014 sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past. Ellen Page publicly revealed she was gay back in 2014 and she’s been very open about her love and support for her sexual orientation ever since. Most recently, she lashed out at fellow Marvel hero Chris Pratt due to his support for a church that she claimed was anti-LGBTQ.
During a recent interview with Porter, the actor opened up about her journey from 2007’s Juno to this year’s Netflix series The Umbrella Academy. According to Ellen Page, members of the industry tried to suppress her true sexual identity from the public early on in her career. Check out what the actor had to say below.
“I was distinctly told, by people in the industry, when I started to become known: ‘People cannot know you’re gay.'”
The X-Men: The Last Stand star also revealed that the suppression went as far as people in the industry forcing her to wear certain clothes and shoes during photo shoots.
“And I was pressured — forced, in many cases — to always wear dresses and heels for events and photo shoots. As if lesbians don’t wear dresses and heels. But I will never let anyone put me in anything I feel uncomfortable in ever again.”
The latest installment of the X-Men franchise hits theater this june, simply titled Dark Phoenix. Later this year, fans will also be treated to another long-awaited addition the franchise, The New Mutants. The two Marvel films have had their release date pushed back multiple times and even The New Mutants doesn’t seem to have an established release date right now, with some rumors even suggesting that it could debut on Hulu due to the Disney/Fox deal but nothing has been officially announced regarding that topic just yet.
