Zatanna is headed to the big screen.
Variety reports that Promising Young Woman director Emerald Fennell has signed on to write the highly-anticipated Zatanna movie. Produced by the DC Films division of Warner Bros. and J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions, Zatanna is set to be released theatrically. The titular role has not yet been cast.
Created by Gardner Fox and Murphy Anderson, Zatanna made her first comic book appearance in the pages of 1964’s Hawkman #4. A powerful magician and member of the Justice League Dark, Zatanna is the daughter of Giovanni “John” Zatara, a Golden Age hero. Serinda Swan brought the character to life in the final three seasons of The CW’s Smallville.
J.J. Abrams has been developing a slew of Justice League Dark projects for a while now, with one of them being an HBO Max series focusing on the demon-hunting supernatural detective John Constantine. The character, who often serves as the leader of the Justice League Dark, has been romantically linked to Zatanna in the comics.
Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman recently earned five Academy Awards nominations, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. In addition Promising Young Woman, Fennell is also known for her work on the second season of the BBC America thriller Killing Eve and her appearances in series like Call the Midwife and The Crown.
