‘Black Panther’: Everett K. Ross Inspired By Chandler From ‘Friends’

The creation of Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman) from 'Black Panther' by Christopher Priest was initially inspired by Chandler Bing from 'Friends'.

In Marvel’s Black Panther, actor Martin Freeman reprises his minor role from Captain America: Civil War as Everett K. Ross. Ross is a member of the CIA and a former liaison of its Joint Counter Terrorism Task Force. Interestingly enough, Ross is inspired by Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) from the popular sitcom, Friends.

Christopher Priest created Ross, and was inspired by the Friends character when creating him. While speaking with Vulture, Priest recalled a certain moment from Friends featured in the episode, “The One with the Blackout” that epitomizes Chandler and in turn, Ross (not the Friends character of the same name):

“Respected and successful, Bing nevertheless was the horrified fish out of water.”

Previously, Freeman has mentioned that Ross has an “uneasy peace” with T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and goes through a “strange” and “enlightening” journey in Wakanda.

Here is the synopsis:

Black Panther follows T’Challa who, after the events of Captain America: Civil War, returns home to the isolated, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to take his place as King. However, when an old enemy reappears on the radar, T’Challa’s mettle as King and Black Panther is tested when he is drawn into a conflict that puts the entire fate of Wakanda and the world at risk.”

Directed by Ryan Coogler, the film stars Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke,  Florence Kasumba, Sterling K. Brown, Andy Serkis and John Kani.

Black Panther will be released in theaters on February 16, 2018.
