The star revealed work was underway on the stop-motion animated film for Netflix before the pandemic.
Obi-Wan Kenobi star Ewan McGregor revealed in an interview with ACE Universe that he’ll be playing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinnochio. The stop-motion adaptation of the classic story is set to arrive on Netflix in 2021 as part of the filmmaker’s existing deal with the streaming service. The director is also writing the film, which will be his first animated feature. McGregor confirmed his role when asked about upcoming projects, noting that he was working on the film before the pandemic caused the film and TV industry to come to a halt.
“I’m playing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro’s version of ‘Pinocchio’ and I had started working on that before I left for New York.”
The star also revealed a little of what to expect from the film, but was careful to point out that audiences won’t be able to see it for some time since stop-motion animation takes a considerable amount of time to produce. McGregor explained that he’s nearly done with the dialogue in the film before teasing a potential musical number in Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinnochio, but joked that he wasn’t “at liberty” to talk about it further.
“Some of that is recorded. And of course, it’s stop-frame animation so it’s going to take them a great long time to make that film. But my first part of that, which is recording his dialogue, is sort of done. There may or may not be a song that needs to be recorded. I’m not sure that I’m at liberty to discuss that.”
