F. Gary Gray, director of 'The Fate of the Furious' becomes the first African American to have directed a film that has hit the billion-dollar mark.
Now that the film has hit passed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, F. Gary Gray is now the first African American filmmaker to direct a film to hit that milestone. As of the publishing of this post, The Fate of the Furious has grossed $211 million at the U.S. domestic box office and has received over $1.16 billion in worldwide totals.
This isn’t the first milestone that F. Gary Gray has achieved as a successful black filmmaker. His previous film Straight Outta Compton (2015) helped turn him into the highest grossing black director of all-time.
Taking into account F. Gary Gray’s filmography preceding The Fate of the Furious, the eighth film in Universal Pictures’ blockbuster franchise has made more money than all of his previous directorial efforts combined.
2017 is turning into the year of milestones for black filmmakers at the box office. Jordan Peele, director of Universal Pictures’ sleeper hit Get Out has become the most profitable movie of the year.
F. Gary Gray’s hard work as a prominent filmmaker has really paid off. Congratulations to him for achieving this incredible milestone.
