From the start, the idea of a stand alone Joker film that focused on the character’s past was a dubious one. A big part of what made the character work so well was that his past was rather ambiguous. His claimed origin stories constantly contradicting each other and never remaining definitive for long, suggesting that he himself may not be aware of who he was before becoming the Clown Prince of Crime. Fans, however, seem to be on board with Joaquin Phoenix, even if they aren’t sold of the film itself.
Some, for example, already want him to replace the Jared Leto version of the character:
Others have been comparing it positively to the looks of Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker and speculating that the look is something of a “before” version:
Some, however, are not as sold, comparing this look to something they would expect out of one of the Clown Prince of Crime’s henchmen:
Some like Joaquin Phoenix’s facial expressions but seem disappointed by the lack of the chemical wash look:
From the look of things, people are rather divided on the new take on the character but seem to agree that Phoenix was a good casting pic for the character. Whether or not the film turns out any good or if their is even a point to it, however, is still up in the air.
