‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ & J.K. Rowling Cast Talk Movie Expectations

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in less than a week and excitement is in the air. At a press conference on Thursday, the cast and writer J.K. Rowling talked about the pressure they’re all feeling about delivering a good film, mostly because they’re nervous about fan expectations.

J.K. Rowling seems to be very happy and excited to be writing within the realm of the magical wizarding world once more and is ready for people to see the movie, but that she tries “not to focus too much on what other people think about the work”.

“I can’t wait for people to see the movie. This is just the beginning and we don’t know which characters are coming back, so this is chapter one and I think people will really like it. I hope so.”

Rowling also discussed Dumbledore’s appearance in future films and the possibility of portraying him as openly gay.

Ezra Miller was pretty nervous about being in the movie and was definitely feeling the pressure, which is, in part, due to the fact that he’s also a big Harry Potter fan.

“I’d like to say that I was scared because as a big Harry Potter fan, I felt like I was running the risk of being compelled to loathe myself. It was certainly a little daunting.”

Katherine Waterston had similar sentiments:

“I was so nervous when we first started and … I was trying to act like I had it more under control than I did.”

Eddie Redmayne chimes in with his thoughts about also being a fan and not wanting to ruin anything:

“Like Ezra said, we were such fans of the books and films and of course didn’t want to be the guy that comes along and ruins it. So there was definitely a sense of expectation on ourselves, but I think that galvanizes you and I think it makes you work harder.”
