‘Ant-Man’ Director Shares Details On His Unmade ‘Fantastic Four’ Film

During an Ant-Man and The Wasp IMAX screening and Q&A session hosted by Collider, director Peyton Reed shared new details on his pitch for a Fantastic Four film that was never made.

Before 20th Century Fox released the critically maligned Fantastic Four films, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed pitched a version of the project that would have featured Marvel’s First Family in the ’60 to then Fox Filmed Entertainment CEO] Tom Rothman. While the project clearly took a different direction, Reed recounted his experience working on the film and explained how it would have been similar to the Beatles comedy-musical A Hard Day’s Night:

“I developed it for about a year and we went through some different permutations and some different writers, but yes, one of the big ideas was a set-in-the-’60s thing that at the time was structurally gonna be basically like [The Beatles’ 1964 comedy-musical] A Hard Day’s Night, where we were not going to even deal with the origin story. […] It was just going to be like you’re in Downtown Manhattan and they’re there. It was a pretty exciting idea. At the time — again this was 2002 or ’03 — early on, way pre-MCU, I felt like Fox was not gonna make it.”

The Ant-Man director later explained why his take on the Fantastic Four ultimately fell through, saying “[…] it felt like they sort of wanted to make a B-movie out of it. So we parted ways.”

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame is expected to star Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Paul Rudd, Jeremy Renner, Brie Larson, Josh Brolin and Chris Pratt.

Avengers: Endgame is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 26, 2019.
