‘Fantastic Four’ Director Josh Trank Pitched Hard-R ‘Venom’ Movie

Fantastic Four director Josh Trank pitched Sony a “hard-R” Venom movie that the producer reportedly instantly hated.

Fantastic Four director Josh Trank revealed that he butted heads with Matt Tolmach after the Sony producer reportedly hated his “hard-R” pitch for a Venom movie. Obviously as fans know, Tom Hardy’s Venom eventually ended up arriving in theaters from Reuben Fleischer with a script from Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg and Kelly Marvel. But it could’ve looked a little different if Trank had continued work on the symbiote’s big-screen solo movie.

During the interview, the Fantastic Four director explained that his “hard-r” Venom pitch was in the vein of Jim Carrey’s The Mask and producer Matt Tolmach was very authoritative in a negative way. Trank explained that the Sony producer would tell him that he had to do things his way rather than using his own flair. Take a look at the quote from the Polygon profile below.

“I didn’t like how Matt Tolmach was coming at me in that situation, because it felt very kind of authoritative. Well, if you don’t like what I’m doing, and you’re telling me that I have to do something along the lines of what you want, and you’re going to tell it to me in this way — sorry, but I have other things I can be doing.”

Do you think the Fantastic Four director should’ve got his chance on a Venom movie? What do you think of the Tom Hardy film? Sound off in the comments below!

Directed by Andy Serkis from a script written by Kelly Marcel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Michelle Williams as Anne Weying, Naomie Harris as Shriek, and Woody Harrelson as Carnage.

Venom is now available on Digital HD, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and DVD. Venom: Let There Be Carnage will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
