‘Fantastic Four’ Star Toby Kebbell Reveals His Disappointment In The Film

Josh Trank’s 2015 interpretation of Fantastic Four remains one of the many mysteries of Hollywood. How did something with so much potential, end up so terrible? The film featured an incredible cast including, The Spectacular Now‘s Miles Teller, Creed‘s Michael B. Jordan, Jumper‘s Jamie Bell, The Martian‘s Kate Mara and RocknRolla‘s Toby Kebbell as Doctor Doom. Trank promised an adaptation of the Ultimate version, thus the incredibly younger cast. However, when rumours developed that spoke of inner turmoil between Trank and producer, Simon Kinberg, many feared the worst.

Just days before the film opened, Trank published a – since deleted – Tweet which stated, “A year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though.” The filmmaker’s brash comments did not go unnoticed, as Hollywood seemingly “blacklisted” him. For the uneducated, when Hollywood blacklists someone, it means they do not let them pursue potential jobs or gigs. The film went on to score 9% on Rotten Tomatoes, and a disappointing $168 million worldwide.

Despite Trank’s position in Hollywood, most of the actors escaped the project unharmed. For instance, Toby Kebbell is now starring in this month’s Kong: Skull Island. Kebbell, who portrayed the iconic baddie, Doctor Doom, has revealed his sheer disappointment with the project, and the treatment of his character. The actor was asked if he could return in a potential sequel or reboot, leading the British actor to simply say:

“I won’t be in it!”

HeyUGuys then asked the actor how he thinks Fox stuffed the character up in their latest attempt at the franchise. Kebbell stated:

“Truth is, Doom is an incredible bad guy. They just keep trying to force him into the Fantastic Four. They just need to move it out because he smashes up Thor and Iron Man and they get wasted. Doom is a monster, but my Doom was not, so that is that.”

The outlet then asked if Kebbell would return, if the character was loaned out to Marvel Studios:

“Yeah, if they lend him out like a footballer (Soccer). They do with Spider-Man!”

Like many of us, Kebbell was extremely disappointed with the result of that picture. And when you are portrayed one of the coolest villains in comic book history, you have every right to be! Kebbell is a talented young man, who could have delivered a really unique take on Doom, had the studio given Trank a little more leeway.
