‘Finding Dory’ Earns $136 Million Opening Weekend

Disney/Pixar has done it again. Finding Dory has broken the all-time record for the biggest opening by an animated movie. The highly anticipated sequel to Finding Nemo, brought in over $136 million opening weekend.

$136 million gives it the third-highest-grossing opening weekend of 2016, behind Captain America: Civil War and Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice but ahead of DeadpoolDory continues to break records. Including making an estimated $55 million on Friday, taking the single-day record for an animated movie from Shrek the Third, which made $47 million.

This type of opening also makes Dory one of the top ten highest-grossing films of 2016. Angry Birds, which was currently the year’s eight-highest-grossing movie, only earned $101 million. The records continue, Dory was also the biggest PG-rated opening and the largest Pixar opening weekend, beating out Toy Story 3, which opened with $110.3 million.

Coming in second place was the latest from Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart. Central Intelligence grossed over $34.5 million.

While Dory celebrates, it’s not all good news at the box office.

Duncan Jones’ Warcraft is projected to drop 74% in its second weekend of release. This is a major drop off for a studio release in recent memory — more so than Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. X-Men: Apocalypse is in its third week of release and has just passed the $140 million mark.
