An official synopsis for The Defenders has yet to be released but it is known that the series follow Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) as they put their resources together to take on the mysterious businesswoman named Alexandra, played by Sigourney Weaver.
In the comics, Luke and Danny Rand aka Iron Fist have a strong friendship with each other. Mike Colter revealed last month that the team-up series will see Harlem’s hero Luke Cage serve as a mentor to Danny but Finn Jones recently spoke with IGN about working with Colter and it sounds like the friendship will develop organically between Iron Fist and Luke in The Defenders:
“It feels effortless. I kind of feel when you’ve got a duo like this — which is so hyped up by the fans — there’s a worry that it may be too oversold and you may be kind of trying too hard to create that connection — that spark. But actually, between me and Mike [Colter], we get on really well. There’s a really great energy between the two of us actors. He’s so much fun. But then also, as the characters and the way the scenes are written, it’s really interesting the way they are doing it and it’s a real slow build and it feels very real and dynamic and honest. Some of the scenes in The Defenders with Mike have been my favorite so far.”
Effortless might just be exactly what we need. Friendship itself is involuntary and if the actors have already found that off screen it will be much easier to translate it in a way that feels natural and organic to the screen which is exactly what longtime Marvel fans who have been waiting to see this epic friendship brought to life deserve.
So what do you think? Are you excited for The Defenders? From what you’ve heard so far, do you think Marvel is getting the Luke Cage/Iron Fist dynamic right? Sound off in the comments below.
Iron Fist hits Netflix March 17 while The Defenders will arrive on the streaming service sometime in the summer of 2017.
