The Cartoon Network classic, Samurai Jack will be making its triumphant return to the network’s Saturday Night lineup on the Toonami block. The show was canceled back in 2004 but was continued through IDW comics in 2013. Now that many fans of the original cartoon have grown up, it looks like that the show will be a much darker tone than the original series had.
This new season will be set 50 years following where season 4 left off. It will also be comprised of 10 episodes as a 5 hour movie, which will close out Jack’s story. It has been continuously described as a darker, more adult version of the original series, expected to be rated TV-MA.
A new image from the upcoming season has been revealed at the Annency Festival D’Animation at France, which you can check out in Cartoon Brew’s Instagram below. If this image is any indication, Jack is going to go through so much blood, and fans are in for a darker time.
After being sent into the future by evil wizard Aku, young samurai Jack makes a quest to return to the past and undo the destruction caused by the wizard. Along the way Jack enlists allies to defeat some of Aku’s henchmen and other villains before getting to the top dog to defeat him and find the portal that can return Jack to his own time. “Samurai Jack” was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, who had previously created “Dexter’s Laboratory,” one of Cartoon Network’s first original series.
The new Samurai Jack season will premiere later this year. Stay tuned for more coverage.
