Mike Dougherty Gives Fans Rough First Look At Godzilla In ‘King Of The Monsters’

Director Mike Dougherty shares the first look of Godzilla in 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' to celebrate Day 69 of shooting for the March 2019 release.

Even though there’s still over a year to go before the release of Godzilla: King Of The Monsters, that’s clearly not tempering the excitement of director Mike Dougherty. Currently 70 days into a scheduled shoot, the director best known for his work on Krampus and Trick ‘r Treat celebrated Day 69 by tweeting out a first-look at Godzilla himself, albeit in need of some rendering. You can check out the tweet below:

Dougherty has been no stranger to the not-so-cryptic tweets since shooting. Just over a month ago, the director shared an image of the weapon known as the Oxogen Destroyer. The tweet, currently pinned on his page, shows the weapon from the classic 1954 Godzilla movie — a huge nod to diehard fans and a potential sign of big things to come.

While the shot above leaves little to the imagination, the image seems to be setting up a reaction shot — projecting Godzilla on-screen above what seems to be a cockpit. Some have pointed to the Godzilla’s neck being thicker as a sign of physical growth. King Kong is said to be putting on some weight for their inevitable showdown, so Godzilla growing is entirely possible. However, Day 69 of a shoot for a movie that’s a year and a half away … let’s just say Godzilla will look quite different from that image above. Plus, this incarnation of Godzilla isn’t exactly known for his slender frame to begin with.

Still, it’s nice to see the director is excited to share Godzilla with the fans. This could pay off down the road if Dougherty shares just as much when the movie is well into production.

Legendary‘s Godzilla: King of the Monsters begins his reign on March 22, 2019. The film’s cast includes Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Aisha Hinds, Anthony Ramos, Charles Dance, Elizabeth Ludlow, Zhang Ziyi, Anthony Ramos, Ken Watanabe, Randy Havens, Thomas Middleditch, Bradley Whitford, and Sally Hawkins. The film will feature the iconic kaiju Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah and, of course, Godzilla himself.

The film will be followed by Godzilla vs. Kong, currently slated for a May 22, 2020 release date.
