Fox Reconfiguring ‘X-Men’ Franchise, ‘New Mutants’ Could Start Filming Next Spring

20th Century Fox is reportedly reconfiguring the X-Men franchise, but Josh Boone's New Mutants could begin filming next Spring.

X-Men: Apocalypse was one of the biggest X-Men films to date, but also a massive step back for the series. The Fox film received lukewarm reviews and grossed $544 million at the worldwide box office, but this figure could be considered a disappointment after the previous entry, X-Men: Days of Future Past, which earned $748 million and was met with a much more positive reaction from critics and fans of the long-standing franchise.

This has forced 20th Century Fox to go back to the drawing board, according to The Hollywood Reporter, who have revealed that the X-Men series is currently being “reconfigured.” The next X-Men film will be written by Simon Kinberg, but will not be directed by Bryan Singer, who helmed Apocalypse and the first two X-Men movies.

Kinberg is writing the next X-Men film with Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy “optimistically in mind,” but Fox will have to negotiate new deals with these actors to bring them back for another film due to the fact that their three-picture contracts came to an end with Apocalypse. The same applies to Nicholas Hoult, but there’s no word on whether or not Fox wants him to return to the role Hank McCoy.

All of the above means that it’s likely going to be a while until we see another X-Men film from Fox, but the report mentions that Josh Boone’s New Mutants could begin filming next Spring. What do you guys think? Let us know in the comment section below.
