Fox Cancels X-Men Show ‘The Gifted’ After Two Seasons

Fox has canceled its X-Men television series The Gifted after two seasons.

With the confirmation that the FX show Legion would return for a third (and final) season, many The Gifted fans were hoping they too would get a third season to round out the story. However, The Gifted has been cancelled by Fox after just two seasons.

The Gifted starred Stephen Moyer, Amy Acker, Natalie Alyn Lind and Percy Hynes White as the Struckess, a happy suburban family who are forced to go on the run when it is revealed that their children have mutant powers. Along the way, they find refuge with an underground group of mutants, who fight to protect mutant kind from the forces of evil. The initially show had lots of hype around it with X-Men veterans Bryan Singer, Simon Kinberg, and Lauren Schuler Donner coming back to produce the series, as well as Singer directing the pilot. The series was co-produced by Marvel Television with Jeph Loeb and Jim Chory serving as executive producers.

While the series garnered generally positive reviews, viewership declined. The first season of The Gifted averaged 3.31 million total viewers while season two of the show experienced a significant dip, falling to only 1.95 million viewers. It seemed that the show was doing fine and had a decent fan base, but following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox, the series was no longer worth continuing. Are you sad The Gifted got cancelled? What do you think Disney will do with the X-Men characters? Let us know in the comments!

While the The Gifted may be cancelled, you can expect the X-Men to return in this summer’s Dark Phoenix. Here’s the film’s synopsis:

“This is the story of one of the X-Men’s most beloved characters, Jean Grey, as she evolves into the iconic DARK PHOENIX. During a life-threatening rescue mission in space, Jean is hit by a cosmic force that transforms her into one of the most powerful mutants of all. Wrestling with this increasingly unstable power as well as her own personal demons, Jean spirals out of control, tearing the X-Men family apart and threatening to destroy the very fabric of our planet. The film is the most intense and emotional X-Men movie ever made. It is the culmination of 20 years of X-Men movies, as the family of mutants that we’ve come to know and love must face their most devastating enemy yet — one of their own.”

Dark Phoenix is set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019. Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on the future of the X-Men.
