‘Batgirl’ Comic Writer Gail Simone Hints At DC Films With Barbara Gordon

Batgirl and Birds of Prey comic writer Gail Simone has just given fans a big hint that introducing Barbara Gordon is a big priority for DC Films.

Barbara Gordon’s absence is noted from the Birds of Prey movie, which is a team where she is typically a founding member (not necessarily as Batgirl, but as Oracle in some situations). Batgirl was originally suggested to be a part of the script, but was removed in favor of bringing Harley Quinn in and making the project R-rated in nature. Meanwhile, DC Films still commissioned a Batgirl script from Birds of Prey screenwriter Christina Hodson, which will likely be PG-13 and is currently looking for a director.

However, it’s not all bad news for fans of Batgirl and Barbara Gordon. Gail Simone, who wrote several Birds of Prey comics, has indicated that multiple projects involving Barbara Gordon are in development:

As the character of Barbara Gordon was seemingly excised from the script of Birds of Prey in favor of a Batgirl standalone, it seems possible that DC Films want the character to be more accessible to a younger audience – and perhaps a PG-13 movie where she teams up with the Birds of Prey is not off the table. Meanwhile, since The Batman seems to be set in its own continuity, there’s also room for Barbara Gordon to appear as a supporting character in that film and its potential follow-ups as well.

Directed by Cathy Yan from a script penned by Bumblebee writer Christina Hodson, Birds of Prey stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya, Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz, Ewan, McGregor as Black Mask, and Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. Ali Wong, Robert Catrini, and Michael Masini have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

Birds of Prey will be released in theaters on February 7, 2020.
