Gal Gadot On Wonder Woman From Her Film To ‘Justice League’

Even with the not-so-warm critical response to Zack Snyder‘s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, one of the most universally praised aspects of that film was Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman. Her presence in the film was a shining light, and helped create excitement for her cinematic origin story directed by Patty Jenkins.

Since Batman v Superman, Gal Gadot has grown more as an actress – much of which is thanks to Jenkins and her fellow co-stars in Wonder Woman. But given that the DC Extended Universe first introduced Diana Prince in the modern day setting, Gadot had to project different types of emotions for audiences to understand where she began before she became Wonder Woman.

Gal Gadot spoke with Cinema Blend about her experiences playing Wonder Woman in all three DCEU films she’s done. Given the timeline of her character, she has had a unique experience as an actress leading a major superhero film:

When I just started, the first time I played Wonder Woman, was on Batman v Superman, and it was current day, so I got to play the ‘end result’ of who Wonder Woman is. And I was very curious to understand and really go through who she is and how she became Wonder Woman. And finally on Wonder Woman we had the chance to go and dig deep, and really establish this beautiful character.

When Diana leaves Themyscira and confronts the horrors of World War I, she is definitely a fish out of water. However, despite the dangers afoot, she exhibits an innocence and optimism that defines her as a heroine many decades before she helps Bruce Wayne/Batman (Ben Affleck) unite the Justice League.

And it was really important for Patty and me that this character will be relatable. And I think the fact that she’s the most powerful warrior, but she can also be vulnerable; and she can be confident but confused; blunt, but curious. There’s so many different qualities to her character that makes her not perfect and easier for us to relate. She’s still Diana, but nowadays she’s wiser and more educated about the complexities of life and the world and mankind. But she’s always full of compassion and warmth and love for everyone.
