The latest episode of Game of Thrones featured a reunion between Sophie Turner’s Sansa Stark and Sandor Clegane/The Hound, the former personal bodyguard of the deceased King Joffrey who protected Sansa on more than one occasion before fleeing King’s Landing. During their conversation, Sansa recounted the physiological and sexual abuse she experienced at the hands of Petyr Baelish and Ramsay Bolton, which the Hound noted would not have happened had she left King’s Landing with him. Sansa replied by telling the Hound, “Without Littlfinger, Ramsay, and the rest I would have stayed a little bird all my life.”
Since the episode aired, many have criticized the Game of Thrones writers and showrunners for characterizing Sansa’s rape as a character building experience. Now, Jessica Chastain, who co-stars with Sophie Turner in the upcoming X-Men film titled Dark Phoenix, has taken to Twitter to express her own criticism of the controversial writing in the recent episode of Game of Thrones:
“Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly. The #littlebird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is solely because of her. And her alone. #GameOfThrones“

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones airs this Sunday while Jessica Chastain and Sophie Turner’s X-Men film, Dark Phoenix, hits theaters in one month.

Dark Phoenix is set to be the final installment of the current iteration of the X-Men franchise under Twentieth Century Fox before the film series is rebooted under the Marvel and Disney umbrella.
Dark Phoenix will be released in theaters on June 7, 2019, and Game of Thrones airs at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
