Well, it’s finally official: the next season of Game of Thrones will only consist of seven episodes, HBO announced on Monday. We first heard that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were planning a shorter seventh season back in April, but now we have official confirmation by the network.
The network has also revealed that production on season seven will begin this Summer and that the show won’t return until Summer 2017. Here’s why we’ll have to wait longer this time, according to Casey Bloys, the new President of Programming of HBO:
“Now that winter has arrived on Game of Thrones, executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss felt that the storylines of the next season would be better served by starting production a little later than usual, when the weather is changing. Instead of the show’s traditional spring debut, we’re moving the debut to summer to accommodate the shooting schedule.”
There’s no word on whether the eight, and likely final season will also be shorter, but the showrunners have previously mentioned that the series will probably wrap after 13 more episodes, meaning that the final season might only be six episodes long.
