The highly anticipated seventh season of HBO’s Game of Thrones has officially commenced production in Ireland, according to Entertainment Weekly. As per usual, the show will also shoot in many other locations, including Spain and Iceland.
As many of you no doubt already know, Game of Thrones usually starts filming in July, but the show is getting a late production start this year. This season will also be shorter than the previous ones, since it will consist of seven episodes instead of the usual ten. Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss recently explained the delay:
“We don’t have an air date yet, but this year will probably be a bit later. We’re starting a bit later because at the end of this season, winter is here. And that means that sunny weather doesn’t really serve our purposes any more. So we’ve kind of pushed everything down the line, so we could get some grim, grey weather even in the sunnier places that we shoot.”
Yesterday, we found out that Jim Broadbent has joined the cast of season seven, though no details were provided on his role. The veteran actor will appear as a “significant” character in the penultimate season, which will premiere sometime next summer.
