HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys recently gave an update in regards to the holdup of the season eight renewal for Game of Thrones. Bloys also gave an update about where the cable network was in regards to the spin-off series.
Bloys says it’s not official yet, but that they’ve been in talks about whether or not to do it.
“All I can say is that we’re exploring it. We don’t have any scripts, we’re not even close to saying ‘Oh let’s do this.’ But it’s a big enough property that we would be foolish not to explore it. It’s a really rich world. We’d be foolish not to look at it.”
Bloys is right. It’d be a loss on HBO’s part if they didn’t at least try and negotiate some way to keep the franchise alive. Author George R.R. Martin has several prequel books that could be considered for a spin-off series. It’s clear HBO doesn’t want to let the series and its vast potential simply end with Game of Thrones’ final season.
