S.J. Clarkson has signed on to direct the pilot of the yet-to-be titled Game of Thrones prequel from Kingsman: The Secret Service and Kick-Ass writer Jane Goldman. Clarkson is best known for directing episodes of Marvel’s Jessica Jones and Orange Is the New Black. She’s set to direct the next Star Trek movie for Paramount Pictures.
Naomi Watts and Josh Whitehouse are set to star in the Game of Thrones spin-off. Joining them are Naomi Ackie, Denise Gough, Jamie Campbell Bower, Shella Atim, Ivanno Jeremiah, Georgie Henley, Alex Sharp and Toby Regbo. Character details are being kept under wraps.
With Game of Thrones coming to a close after its upcoming eighth season, HBO is looking to capitalize on its success and expand upon the series developed by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. But don’t expect to see the prequel series launch anytime soon. The first spin-off from the premium cabler is not expected to debut until one year after the final season of Game of Thrones airs.
Game of Thrones is set to return for its six-episode conclusion in 2019. Benioff, Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill have written the final six episodes, which are being directed by David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik, with Benioff and Weiss helming the series finale.
