Initially, when the Game of Thrones creators were announced to be heading over to Lucasfilm after finishing their work on the final season of the hit fantasy series for HBO, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were revealed to be developing a series of Star Wars films though no set number was ever given as to many the duo would produce. TVLine has confirmed Benioff and Weiss have indeed signed on for a new trilogy.
While the Game of Thrones creators are not involved in any other future projects for HBO, who are developing multiple spin-offs based on the series, HBO network president Casey Bloys revealed on Friday that he is hopeful Benioff and Weiss will return to the premium cabler after producing the three Star Wars films:
“Dan and David are finishing up the final season [of Game of Thrones] and then they are going to go into the Star Wars universe. When they come out of that, I assume they will come back to us.”
Further details on future Star Wars films from Benioff and Weiss remain under wraps. In addition to a trilogy from the Game of Thrones creators, Rian Johnson is also expected to begin developing his own Star Wars trilogy after he finishes Knives Out though no details have been revealed since the project was originally announced in November of 2017.
On the horizon, Lucasfilm is set to conclude the Skywalker Saga with Star Wars: Episode IX this December. JJ Abrams is directing the film which stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Keri Russell, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, and Billy Dee Williams. Carrie Fisher will appear as General Leia Organa through the use of previously unreleased footage shot for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
In addition to future film projects, Lucasfilm is also launching two live-action Star Wars television series on Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+. Diego Luna is set to reprise his Rogue One: A Star Wars Story role as Cassian Andor in a prequel series which will follow the Rebel spy working as an intelligence operative during the formative years of the Rebel Alliance. Meanwhile, The Mandalorian will feature Pedro Pascal as a lone gunslinger after the events of Return of the Jedi. The series which hails from Jon Favreau also stars Gina Carano, Giancarlo Esposito, Emily Swallow, Carl Weathers, Omid Abtahi, Werner Herzog, and Nick Nolte.
