‘Game Of Thrones’: Peter Dinklage On Tyrion’s Return To Westeros

The previous season of Game of Thrones concluded with Daenerys Targaryen finally making her way to Westeros with an impressive posse of fan-favorite allies by her side, including Tyrion Lannister. However, while Tyrion may be a valuable member of Daenerys’ alliance, his return to Westeros could prove to be a fatal mistake as the youngest Lannister’s siblings, Cersei and Jaime, have both vowed revenge on their brother for killing their father, Tywin. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, actor Peter Dinklage discussed Tyrion’s potential family reunion and how the Lannister outcast has found a new purpose in life with Daenerys.

Dinklage explained how Tyrion is returning to Westeros as a different man and how he is preparing for his potential reunion for Cersei and Jaime:

“He’s returning home, and returning home a new person. He has Dany and the dragons on his side but he is a very different person than when he left this place. And he’s returning to a brother he loves and a sister he [dot dot dot]. He’s bracing himself.”

Dinklage elaborated on how Tyrion has changed since he first left Westeros:

“He was just going to drink himself to death after the end of season 4, then Varys gave him a purpose in life and then in Daenerys he saw somebody he could get behind. That’s what somebody like Tyrion needs — he needs a gig to get behind. Give him a drink and he doesn’t do so well.”

Dinklage also admitted that this season was the first one where he was concerned that his character might not survive:

“The first thing I really do when I get the scripts is I go to the last page of the last episode and then look backward until I find my name to see if I survive.”
