‘Rogue One’: Gareth Edwards On What Inspired Him To Shoot Like A War Movie

Director Gareth Edwards recently commented on what inspired him to shoot 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' like a war movie.

Earlier today, the first reactions for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit the internet after Lucasfilms let a select audience watch the first twenty eight minutes of the film at Skywalker Ranch. All of them have been positive so far.

Director Gareth Edwards then later sat down with Collider for an interview where he discussed shooting the film in total secrecy and how he filmed Rogue One like a documentary in a war zone, among other things.

“When we started, the studio was like, ‘Well, how do these movies differ from the saga films?’ One of the early experiments we did was taking real war photography, pictures of Vietnam, conflicts in the Middle East, and World War II. And we literally photoshopped rebel helmets on the tops of the real soldiers. We looked at this stuff and it was really effective and you’re like, ‘Oh my God, I really feel for these guys’. There was something about the realism of that we showed it to [Disney] and everyone was like, ‘Go make that movie. That looks great.'”

When asked what the best part of production was, Edwards said the easiest way to answer that question is to ask “what wasn’t?” the best part.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters December 16.
