George Miller Talks ‘Mad Max: The Wasteland’ Plans

While promoting the black-and-white release of Fury Road, George Miller talks about plans for another Mad Max movie, along with a possible Furiosa spin-off.

The Mad Max franchise came roaring back to life with the now cult-classic installment Fury Road. Now, George Miller is saying that he’ll be up to doing two more if given the opportunity – one of which will be a spin-off starring Furiosa.

In talking with The Independent, director George Miller revealed that he and screenwriter Nico Lathouris came up with two additional scripts while Fury Road was in development as a way to further flesh out the setting. Miller, of course, would absolutely love to make sure that these screenplays come to life on the silver screen:

“We dug down deep into the subtext, the backstory of all the characters, and indeed the world…and without really thinking about it, we wrote two other screenplays just as part of the bible of the stories. Somewhere, if the planets align, there will be two other films… I’m hard-wired for the imaginative life. It’s part of who I am. These characters and these worlds tend to swirl around in the back of your brain like imaginary friends. It’s easy to go back to them.”

Tom Hardy is contracted to appear in two other Mad Max movies (one of which is entitled The Wasteland) as Max Rockatansky himself, although it’s not clear if one of these would be the hypothetical Furiosa spin-off, which would focus on the ensemble of Fury Road prior to Imperator Furiosa’s (Charlize Theron) mission to free the brides of the despotic Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Miller also noted that an advantage of Fury Road‘s Development Hell was that they had time to give every character a rich backstory – something that Miller claims can be seen in the scripts to the other two movies. One can only hope that we’ll get to witness them one day – while the return-on-investment for Fury Road was average, the sheer acclaim that the movie got should be more than enough to rev up the engines on the sequels.

Mad Max: Fury Road is available on Blu-Ray and DVD. The “Black & Chrome” edition of the film will be playing this Sunday for one night only, after which it will be released on home video formats in May.
