Dan Aykroyd Has Written A ‘Ghostbusters’ Prequel; Hopes To Make After Jason Reitman’s New Film

During an interview with The Canadian Press, Dan Aykroyd revealed he has written a script for a Ghostbusters prequel titled Ghostbusters High that he hopes will follow Jason Reitman’s upcoming sequel.

The Ghostbusters franchise is set to continue with a sequel helmed by Jason Reitman, the son of original film director Ivan Reitman. Now, Dan Aykroyd, who co-wrote and starred in the first Ghostbusters film and its sequel, revealed that he has penned a script for a 60s-era prequel about the younger days of the original team members:

“[…] I’ve written “Ghostbusters High,” where they meet in New Jersey in 1969 and we’re looking to do that as probably a glorified feature or pilot within the next maybe five years…. And it would lead to a television project and I thought of him immediately for that.

It’s on his desk but that’s years away from the current project. But it’s a neat idea for a prequel. Imagine casting the three characters as teenagers!”

However, Dan Aykroyd also revealed that there are at least two additional concepts he hopes to see follow Jason Reitman’s Ghostbusters film before his proposed prequel:

“[…] we have other stuff after the Jason Reitman-helmed movie. We have at least one or two other concepts for the “Ghostbusters” and then we’ll look at doing the prequel, which will be a perfect button on all we’ve done up to that point.”

Whether or not original cast members Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray will return is currently unknown (Harold Ramis, who portrayed Egon Spengler, passed away in 2014), though the new film will be a sequel to the first two Ghostbusters movies and is set in the present day with new, younger characters.

Directed by Jason Reitman from a script he co-wrote with Poltergeist remake director Gil Kena, the new Ghostbusters sequel will star Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace. Production is set to begin on July 12 in Calgary, Alberta.

The Untitled Ghostbusters Sequel is scheduled to be released in 2020.
