Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Melissa McCarthy revealed she is nothing but supportive of the new Ghostbusters project:
“I’m for anybody who’s making movies. I talked to Jason about it, he’s just always had this idea, and his goes back to the world where the guys did exist and I’m like, ‘I want to see that. I’m all for it. I say like, ‘Tell the story.'”
The new Ghostbusters sequel from Sony will serve as a sequel to the first two films from the studio, ignoring 2016’s female-led reboot of the franchise directed by Paul Feig. Since the film’s announcement, the project has fallen under fire from those involved with the 2016 reboot. While Melissa McCarthy may be backing Jason Reitman to bring Ghostbusters 3 to fruition, Leslie Jones, who starred in the reboot, took to Twitter last month to slam the new sequel, going as far to say that it was like ‘something Trump would do.”
On the flip side, Paul Feig has also been very vocal, showing his support for both Leslie Jones and her feeling regarding the Ghostbusters film, as well as his support for Jason Reitman taking the reigns of his franchise his father Ivan Reitman created in 1984. Jason Reitman himself stirred controversy earlier this week when he commented on a podcast that his new film would be for fans of the original two films like himself. His words were misinterpreted online, causing outrage towards the director for seemingly supporting the trolls who attacked the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot, however, this was not the case.
The 2016 reboot drew much criticism when it was revealed that it would ignore the original continuity of the comedy classic of the same name in favor of an all-female cast. The new film is rumored to feature members of the original team alongside a younger cast of Ghostbusters. Jason Reitman himself was reported to be meeting with new actors this very weekend.
